Visiting Rooftop

There are two terrace levels; you can reach the terrace by stairs or elevator.

There are 250 stairs and it can be hard for the elderly, kids and visitors with health issues.

The elevator takes all the visitors to the first level of the terrace. To reach the top, there are additional stairs and no elevator.

Visitors with mobility issues and elderly guests can tour the first level of the rooftop instead of climbing to the top.

You can walk the entire rooftop. Don’t be misled by the halfway point where the elevator is located.

Continue around the one-way path to see the rest of the roof before circling back to the elevator.

You should note that an elevator ride back down is only available for visitors with mobility issues and others have to take the stairs.

Here are some exclusive insider tips by Vacatis to further enhance your experience at Duomo di Milano:

  • By booking your tickets online, you can avoid unauthorized ticket sellers near the venue who provide illegitimate tickets to tourists.
  • To reach the rooftop, there are 250 stairs, and due to the Milan heat, they can be very hard. Hence, we recommend you pay the extra €3 and opt for an elevator ride.
  • Remember there are more stairs even after the elevator ride, and the return ride is available only for visitors with mobility restrictions.
  • Wear appropriate footwear, as the rooftop has steep slopes and uneven surfaces.
  • Visit after 5.30 pm for shorter security queues and clearer views.
  • Do not miss out on the Duomo Museum, which offers exciting exhibits and replicas of statues in Duomo. Opt for the Duomo Cathedral and museum ticket to visit.
  • Arrive early and visit the rooftop while the rest of the crowd enters the cathedral. After your rooftop tour, move down to the cathedral while the crowd shifts to the terrace.
  • This way, you can enjoy a crowd-free visit to the rooftop and cathedral. The cathedral’s magnificent interior offers a cool and relaxing respite after the rooftop climb.
  • The rooftop has a seperate entrance and you can not return to the Duomo afterwards. You will have to join the security queue to enter again.
  • Visit the rooftop bar on the adjacent department store’s 5th floor for an alternative view of the Duomo. This can be a less strenuous way to enjoy stunning views of the cathedral’s architecture.
